2011-12 Tryout Guidelines

Chantilly Girls Basketball
Program Tryout Guidelines
2011-12

Tryout Period:

  • GBB Tryouts will begin on Monday, November 7thfor all levels
  • Varsity Tryouts: November 7th & 8th: 8:00 – 9:30 am/4:30-6:30 pm
  • November 9th: 4:30 – 6:30 pm Only

  • JV/Freshmen Tryouts: November 7th: Mandatory fitness testing 5:00 pm/Tryouts 6:30 - 8:00 pm
  • November 8th & 9th: 6:30 – 8:00 pm   Gym
  • Teams for all levels will be selected the evening of November 9th.  A fourth tryout may occur should a coach need feel it necessary to have one. Should such occur, this will be determined before the end of the tryout on the 9th and communicated that evening to those prospective players trying out.
  • ALL PROSPECTIVE PLAYERS SHOULD ARRIVE TO THE GYM 30 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE TRYOUT TIME ALLOCATED. PLEASE CHECK YOUR EMAIL AND THE GIRLS BASKETBALL WEBSITE IN CASE THERE IS A CHANGE IN TRYOUT TIME!

  • If a tryout time should change due to gym availability, the new times will be posted on the website at www.chantillysports.org.

Tryout Procedures:

  • Each player will be required to check in at the front table of the gym lobby prior to attending the first tryout.  Players should wear a white t-shirt with their last name written on the back top of the shirt to identify each athlete. Staff members of the GBB Program and/or the Manager(s) will be manning the table to ensure that the prospective player has a Physical, Emergency Care Card, Extracurricular Participation Policy form on file. Additionally, all prospective players and parents must have the online concussion testing completed from the FCPS website at: http://www.fcps.edu/supt/activities/atp/concussioneducationfirst.htmBOTH STUDENT ATHLETES AND ONE PARENT/GUARDIAN MUST COMPLETE THIS ONLINE FORM AND CLICK THE APPROPRIATE LINK. This will generate directly to the Athletic Training office at Chantilly and the ATC’s will provide a list of what has been completed per student-athlete. If all required documents are not on file, you risk the loss of a tryout and will not be provided a replacement tryout.

  • Evaluation of players will include, but are not limited to, the following criteria:
·         Skill Level
·         Sport specific physical fitness
·         Understanding of the Game
·         Ability to Compete
·         Ability to Perform at the level trying out for
·         Attitude
·         Overall ability to commit to the team selected fo

  • Prospective players are asked to attend all tryouts to be considered, or 2 out of 3 at minimum.  If a school event/fall sport within Chantilly prevents a player from attending one or all tryouts, then the tryout period will be extended up and until 11/12.  This will be the last date that a tryout is provided at any level. Outside school events (i.e. club team practices) will not be considered valid reason for missing a tryout/tryouts, and, therefore, an extension will be not be provided.  Medical/Sick absences will adhere to the same rule above as if missing a tryout for a Chantilly event and a valid written note will need to be presented in such instances. If there is a long-term injury that occurs, preventing a player the inability to try-out during such a dated period, the head coach of that team will have the right to make a determination of that player’s participation on his/her team.

  • Prospective players will be evaluated by members of the Chantilly Coaching Staff within the GBB program. All coaches are able to evaluate regardless of the level of tryout. (i.e. Varsity head coach can have input on Frosh/JV Tryouts and vice versa). The Coaching Staff will have an evaluation sheet for each player trying out and will be prepared to discuss that evaluation form for any player who may not make the respective team. This form will be on file with both the head coach of the team as well as the head of the program.

  • At the end of the tryout period the Frosh/JV/Varsity head coach and his/her staff will make the final decisions as to who will make the team. The Coaching Staff, for their respective level, will meet with each player trying out individually and will indicate to the player of her selection or non-selection to the team based on the rating of the above criteria. Additionally, the coaching staff is allowed to request a 1:1 meeting with any prospective players at any time during the tryout period to gain a better understanding of the evaluation criteria listed above from that individual. We ask players and parents to please be mindful that the final tryout evening could extend 30-45 minutes passed the indicated time as to allow time for the coaching staff to spend time with each player trying out.

Tryout Expectations:

·       All players are expected to have a signed and approved VHSL Physical Form, Emergency Care Card and Extracurricular Policy Form on file in order to participate in tryouts. Additionally, you and your parent must have completed the online Concussion testing on the FCPS website:  If the listed forms are not on file, the player, under no circumstances, will be able to step onto the court and, therefore, will be unable to tryout.  Players without such forms will not be given the opportunity to make-up a tryout or extend the period of tryouts. A player may begin tryouts within the tryout period once all forms are on file.

·        It is expected that the coaching staff will provide a fair and timely evaluation to all players interested in trying out for the Girls Basketball Program.  This includes evaluation from both the head coach and his/her assistants.

·        It is strongly encouraged and suggested that each level (Varsity, JV/Frosh) keep no more than 13 players maximum, to provide fairness and good instruction/coaching to each player throughout the season.  A 14th player may be considered should the head coach have a strong explanation in keeping such a number. This will need to be discussed with the head of the program before approval is given.

The following forms are required to be on file and complete for all student-athletes to try out:

·         VHSL Physical (must be on file prior to November 7th as a turn in on this date may not grant you a tryout as the ATC’s must review the physical prior to approving. If you tried out for a fall sport, then one physical should already be on file and there is not a need for an additional one)

·         Emergency Care Card: MUST TURN IN ONE FOR EVERY SPORT TRYING OUT FOR, FALL SPORT ATHLETES MUST SUBMIT ANOTHER ONE

·         Online Concussion Testing for Parents and Athletes: (No form to turn in, this will generate to the ATC’s as a list once completed online. It is best to complete this prior to Thursday, November 3rd. If you were a Fall Sport Athlete, I believe you only require a one time completion and this should be taken care of ) http://www.fcps.edu/supt/activities/atp/concussioneducationfirst.htm

You may turn in these files into the Activities Office (across from the cafeteria) into my mailbox. You must have all forms turned in by noon on Thursday, November 3rd. Otherwise, I will not have access to my mailbox after that time and your forms will not be shown as complete. YOUR PHYSICAL FORM, IF NOT ALREADY SUBMITTED, NEEDS TO BE TURNED INTO THE ATHLETIC TRAINING OFFICE NEAR THE WEIGHT ROOM IN THE GYM LOBBY.
If necessary, the ECC and EPP forms can be turned in the day of tryouts. However, it is best to turn in this paperwork in advance.
