The Charger wrestlers concluded their season with a strong showing at the VHSL AAA State Championships in Virgina Beach. Over two grueling days, the wrestlers battled some of the top athletes in the state to finish 20th overall. Two Chargers claimed all-state honors: Chris Cabe finished 4th in the heavyweight divison and Lloyd Tenaglia finished 6th at 125 lbs. Junior Jack Carlson also participated but lost two close matches, finishing in 14th place. They each capped their seasons with the Chargers by competeting at the highest level; they saw the results of all their hard work in the off-season.
Cabe overcame a first round loss, never panicked, and wrestled tough as he made it all the way back to compete for third place. Despite a valient effort in that match, the Charger heavyweight finished 4th. Cabe is the epitome of what hard work and dedication can produce. His poise and leadership will be missed next year as Cabe looks to compete on the collegiate level. He hopes to attend Franklin and Marshall in Pennslyvania.
Tenaglia took a differnt route on his way to all-state status. He won two close matches, both by the score of 6-4 in order to make it to the state semi-finals, eventually losing the the state runner-up. In the match for sixth, Tenaglia entered the third period down 9-2, and battled back, showing his heart and tenacity, to tie the match at 12. In the end, it wasn't enough as he gave up a takedown in overtime in a heartbreaking match. As he left the mat, Tenaglia was congratulated on his effort by numerous spectators who realized that although he could have given up, that was not possible for Lloyd. He ends his career with the Chargers with 130 wins, a state medal, and the respect and admiration of both his peers and his coaches. Next year will be the first time in six years that the Chargers will not a have a Tenaglia, although there is one more on the way to carry on the tradition. Lloyd will be missed tremendously. He hopes to go to college at USF or Geroge Mason.
Despite having a young team next year, the Chargers hope for big things again in 2010. Next up for the Chargers is the freestyle and greco-roman season this spring.
