To end 2008, the Charger Varsity Wrestlers traveled to Reading, Pennsylvania to compete in the Governor Mifflin Classic; traditionally, Pennsylvania is known as one of the top five states for wrestling in the country. After a grueling 2 days, the Chargers emerged from the field of 18 teams with a 6th place finish. Senior Captains Lloyd Tenaglia (125 lbs) and Chris Cabe (285 lbs) each captured individual championships at their respective weight classes, and for the second time this season, Tenaglia was named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Tenaglia won every match of the tournament by pin or technical fall, including his match in the finals, which he dominated on his way to a second period fall. Cabe captured his third tournament championship of the season, and again reinforced his place as one of the top heavyweight wrestlers in the State.
Additionally, Junior Captain Jack Carlson (145 lbs) impressed the crowd on his way to a 3rd place finish in one of the most difficult weight classes in the tournament. Carlson displayed sound technique and great mat awareness as he captured his 3rd medal in as many opportunities this season.
Super Sophomores Zach Spencer (112 lbs) and Wes Litton (119 lbs) each took a fifth place finish. Litton showed poise and concentration while wrestling his way to his second medal this year. Spencer had the most exciting match of the tournament as he rallied from a 12-1 second period deficit to win the match by pin. He displayed tremendous tenacity and he never gave up despite the odds against him.
The Charger grapplers kick off 2009 with a home dual against Concorde district rivals Centreville on January 7th. The CYA wrestlers and the JV wrestlers will open for the varsity wrestlers, who are looking to avenge a disapointing loss to their cross-town rivals last year. Come out and support your Charger Wrestlers!
