Chantilly's JV escaped Faifax Thursday night with a victory over a highly competitive Fairax squad, 21-13. Chantilly scored on their second offensive possession when sophomore quarterback Carson Romine connected with junior receiver Barzhan Rashid on a 25-yard play action pass in which Rashid sped past the Fairfax secondary to paydirt.
Fairfax came right back on the ensuing possession, tying the game at 7. Chantilly almost made it the length of the field with under 2 minutes to go in the half, but Romine was intercepted at about the 10-yard line and Fairfax ran out the half.
In the third quarter, Chantilly's offense struggled to sustain a drive and the defense had problems holding the Fairfax offense, allowing them to drive field and go up 13-7. Luckily, Fairfax took a 15-yard personal foul penalty on the extra point attempt and the ball was kicked wide left.
The Chargers came back, driving the field with hard-nosed running by freshman running back Will Hill, as well as another Romine-to-Rashid bomb, this time for 32 yards and into the Fairfax red zone. Romine took advantage of the Fairfax defense's weak middle, diving into the end zone on a quarterback sneak from 4 yards out. Sophomore Matt Melchiori tacked on the extra point to put the Chargers up 14-13.
The Rebels were stuffed three straight times on their following drive, being forced to punt after 3 plays. Chantilly wasted no time capitalizing. Again, Romine attacked the Fairfax defense, this time with a sneak that went for 40 yards. On a critical 4th-and-inches play, junior fullback Jeff Lawhorne bulldozed and hopped over an unblocked defensive end, stretching for the first down to keep the drive alive. The following play, Hill broke multiple tackles and dragged a couple Fairfax players into the end zone, putting the Chargers up by 7 points. Melchiori again added the extra point to make it an 8-point lead.
With time running out, Fairfax drove down inside the Charger 10-yard line, threatening to score. Fortunately, the Rebels were out of timeouts, and time ran out, giving Chantilly the 21-13 victory.
