It was a hard fought game for the Chantilly JV squad, but a botched PAT snap and a 2-pt. conversion which came up 6 inches short spelled a 2-point loss to cross-town rival Westfield at the Bulldogs' stadium.
The Chargers set the the tone from the start, driving 80 yards on an 18-play drive which consumed all but 30 seconds of the first quarter. The drive was highlighted by a 4th-and-5 conversion in which quarterback Carson Romine connected with receiver CJ Irwin around midfield for an 8-yard gain which kept the drive alive. The Chargers finally cashed in on a 7-yard rollout pass from Romine to running back Jeff Lawhorne for a touchdown. On the ensuing extra point, the snap was low and Romine could not set it correctly for placekicker Matt Melchiori. The kick was a low line drive which was blocked by the Westfield defense. This would prove to be costly for the Chargers.
The next drive had the Westfield offense driving the length of the field until their quarterback was picked off by cornerback Nolan Strittmatter in the end zone. Following this, the Charger offense drove down to the Westfield 2 yard line where they elected to go for the touchdown on fourth down with 2 seconds left. Unfortunately they could not convert on a rollout pass, and they went into the half with a 6-0 lead.
Following halftime, the Charger defense allowed the Westfield offense to score two touchdowns, one on Westfield's first drive of the half and another after the Charger offense coughed up the ball with a fumble which gave the Bulldogs a short field to work with. Following this, though, Chantilly marched down the field during the fourth quarter, led by several gutsy runs by Romine, including a 2-yd sneak which coverted a fourth down around midfield. Chantilly was in business when Romine found junior reciever Barzhan Rashid on a 27-yard post route which set up the Charger offense just outside of the 20-yard line. Soon thereafter, the Chargers found themselves with a 4th-and-5 situation on the Westfield 12-yard line. Romine was able to find receiver CJ Irwin in the flats, and Irwin fought his way for the first down at the Bulldog 5. On the next play, Romine found tight end Trey Huelskamp for a 5-yard touchdown pass on a designed rollout play. Going for the 2-point conversion, Romine audibled for a quarterback sneak which ended up about half-a-foot short of the goalline. Still there was a little over a minute left, but Chantilly could not recover the ensuing onside kick.
Chantilly hopes to bounce back this week as they travel to Herndon to face thier JV squad on Thursday, September 25th.
