The Charger JV squad got the regular season started on the right foot with a resounding 42 to 7 demolishing of the Annandale Atoms.
From the gates, the Chargers were battling the Atoms as well as the referees, being penalized three times within the first five plays, one of these erasing a 30+ yard run by freshman tailback, Will Hill. Hill would soon thereafter help the Chargers convert on a huge 4th down play at midfield, dragging Atom tacklers for a hard-fought 8-yd run which cleared the first down marker by inches. A few plays later, quarterback Carson Romine connected with junior wideout Barzhan Rashid on a beautiful 37-yard pass over the Annandale secondary. Matt Melchiori tacked on the extra point.
For the entire game, the Charger defense wouldn't allow the Atom offense much of anything, constantly making tackles in the backfield and hurrying Annandale's quarterback. The defense was led by interior linemen Nick Eccleston, Dante Verme and Mo Mohammadi as well as linebackers Jon Dugan and Matt Melchiori.
The Chargers scored three more times in the first half with a touchdown run of 7 yards by Devon Westerman, a run of 46 yards by Will Hill and, following a gutsy and successful fake punt by Annandale deep in their own territory, a 45 yard interception return by linebacker Jeff Lawhorne for a touchdown to end the half and put the Chargers up 27-0.
The second half saw more of the same as Romine connected with tight end Mike Harkness on a 6 yard pass for a touchdown. Romine finished the game going 10 of 14 passes for 118 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Charger back-ups ended the game with a dominating running attack down the field which was capped off by a 1-yd touchdown dive by Eric Blackmon. The all-ground drive was headed by Blackmon who had 4 carries for the 31 yards, and was assisted by fellow backs Devon Westerman (4 for 27 yards), Brandon Saa (3 for 14 yards) and Bernabe Mejia (2 carries for 14 yards). The game's leading rusher was Will Hill who had 8 carries for 72 yards and 1 touchdown. The Chargers also tacked on a safety early in the 3rd quarter when Annandale snapped the ball over the punter's head and out the back of the end zone.
This week the Chargers hope to pick up where they left off as they travel to Westfield High to play the Bulldogs Thursday night.
