On Saturday, November 8, the Chantilly Chargers Cross Country team was represented in the Virginia AAA Boys State Championships by junior co-captain, Chris Foley, and racing against the best runners in Virginia, Foley more than held his own. A week after taking a solid runner-up finish at the regional meet, Foley was expected to contend for his first all-state cross country honors. Running in unseasonably warm weather, he showed phenomenal fitness and a newly earned sense of confidence as he raced just off the lead pack of four for the first two miles. Foley committed himself to his goal of a high placing, and completely emptied his tank in the challenging 3rd mile, as he strode in for an 11th place finish, good enough for an all-state medal, and the right to be recognized as one of the best distance runners in the state.
As the official VHSL cross country season comes to a close, Foley will train for the Footlocker Southern Regional Championships on Saturday, November 29th, in Charlotte, NC. He will precede this with the Charger 3200m Open, held at CHS on Saturday, November 22nd. He has enjoyed career bests in nearly every race this season, finishing the season with runner up finishes at the district and regional meets, and top 10 finishes in four of five invitationals, including one win. He will be considered amongst a small group of runners who will be considered favorites to win the state title next fall. The CHS coaching staff and team are proud to have him as our leader, and for the example he has set in competition and in practice, and congratulate him on a wonderful fall, carrying on the Charger tradition of excellence.
