The Chantilly Cross Country team opened their 2008 season with an annual two-mile scrimmage vs. Lee & West Springfield at Burke Lake, on Friday, August 15th. Used primarily as a means of gauging their fitness, the Chargers showed that many of them have done some solid work over the summer, and that there may be a promise of greater things to come this summer.

The boys won their scrimmage with a 32-35 margin over West Springfield.  Leading the way in first place was 2007 All-Region runner, junior Chris Foley.  He ran an impressive time of 10:05.73 for the two miles, winning by 30 seconds, and showing that he intends to be a player in the race for the individual region crown.  The Chargers also showed that they have a solid pack, with senior Wilson Bever, junior Matt Cumpian and senior David Harsh coming in 5th, 6th & 7th respectively.  Senior transfer Patrick Roberts completed the scoring with a 13th place effort.

The girls team also showed promise, despite their 3rd place showing. Running without two of their top 5 runners, they individual improvement from last year.  Junior team captain Rachel Grochowski led the team with her 10th place finish.  Sophomores Hannah Strub (12th) and Kacey Norwood (13th) followed close behind, while juniors Cory Davis (21st) and Taylor Norwood (24th) completed the scoring.

The Chargers have suffered a number of key losses due to graduation/transfers on both the girls and boys sides, but they have shown that they are up to the challenge of maintaining their high standards of being Concorde District & Northern Region challengers this year.  They next compete in one more scrimmage, against Robinson and Edison, on Wednesday, August 27th.  They open up the regular season on Saturday, September 6th, at the Monroe Parker Invitaitonal.  Both meets are at to be held at Burke Lake Park.
