Charger Swim and Dive Defeated by Fairfax

January 16, 2009

Cub Run Rec Center – The visiting Chantilly Chargers faced a tough Rebel squad in perhaps their most challenging meet of the season to date.  Both the Charger boys and girls squads fought hard, but their efforts in the pool and diving board were not enough to pull off the upset in this hard fought Concorde District dual meet.

Boys Competition

The Charger boys took first place in 6 of 12 events, the final score of the boys’ competition was 149-165.  After five meets, the Charger boys have an overall dual meet record of 3-2.

Matt Benecki delivered the first Charger victory with a dominating swim in the 200 free.  Mitch Phillips soon followed with an impressive win in the 50 free with a state cut time.  Phillips added his second first place victory of the night in the 100 free.  Benecki won his second event in the 500 free with Chris Shifflett finishing second.  Kyle Ford was dominant in the 100 back with a first place victory.  The 400 free relay of Benecki, Greg Borowski, Brian Rothschild and Phillips finished the boys competition with a first place and a state cut time – an important milestone for this relay team as the end-of-season championships draw ever closer.

Girls Competition

The Charger girls faced the defending state champions with spirit and enthusiasm, but were unable to fight off the very talented Fairfax squad.  The final score of the meet was 142-170.  The girls’ squad took first place in 4 of 12 events.  The Charger ladies record for the dual meet season is now 3-2.

The first victory of the night was a 1-2 finish in the 200 free with Maggie Shaw and Sarah Graupp leading the pack.  Elizabeth Hall followed with a win in the 50 free with a state cut qualifying time.  Although the Charger ladies led after four swimming events, their lead wouldn’t last long as the Fairfax team put several very strong swimmers in the water.  Hall took first place in the 100 free with a state cut time to help keep Chantilly competitive.  The last victory in the girls’ competition went to Shannon Silsby in the 100 back.

Charger Individual Victory Summary

Matt Benecki (200 free and 500 free), Mitch Phillips (50 free and 100 free), and Elizabeth Hall (50 free and 100 free) were double event winners.

Kyle Ford (100 back), Maggie Shaw (200 free) and Shannon Silsby (100 back) were individual event winners.

The Chargers next meet will be Friday January 23, 2009 at 8:30 at Audrey Moore (Wakefield) Rec Center vs. the Herndon Hornets.
