Freshman Sam Jung won the Concorde Conference 5 Individual Golf Championship on Tuesday September 30th at Pleasant Valley Golf Club. On Wednesday September 24th, Sam Jung birdied the 18th hole from 18 feet to post a 76-73-149 and tie for the lead in the Concorde Conference Tournament. Due to darkness, rain and a non-play date on Thursday, the 3 man playoff was schedule for Tuesday September 30th. After a team playoff between Oakton and Centreville concluded after 1 hole, the 3 players teed off on hole number 2. Sam and Vishal both birdied the hole as did Youjin Kim from Centreville. On the next hole, a Par 5, all 3 players posted par. Sam, making an great up and down after hitting his ball into a green side lateral hazard. The next hole was a 200 yard Par 3, and all 3 players had to get up and down for Par. Sam and Yoojin were able to complete the task. Vishal's putt was on line until the last few inches when it turned right and missed the hole. Sam and Yoojin continued to the Par 5 5th hole (4th playoff hole) and proceeded to play it very differently. Sam's aggressive 2nd shot found the green side bunker, while Yoojin laid up and hit his 3rd shot to 12 feet from the pin. Sam got out of the bunker and both had birdie putts. In the end, both players posted par and moved to the 5th playoff hole - Hole #6. The difference in the playoff turned out to be the approach shots. Yoojin's 2nd shot landed short of the 2nd tier of a 3-tier green. Sam's shot landed on the top tier about 5 feet from the flag for a birdie putt. Yoojin's long putt proved to be harder than expected and he 3-putted, leaving Sam with 2 putts for the win. Sam did just that and become the Individual Champion. Congratulations to all the Charger Golfers for a great Conference Tournament and good luck in Regionals.
