Indoor Track : Districts- Day One

Game Date
Jan 31, 2008

On Thursday, January 31st, the indoor track team competed at Prince Georges Sports & Learning Complex in the first of two days of the Concorde District Championships.  The Chargers held their own in the sprint/hurdle preliminaries, as well as 5 other field event/running finals. At the end of the first day, following 5 events scored, Westfield leads both boys and girls (45 points for each), with Chantilly in 3rd place for the boys (30 points), and 4th for the girls (17 points).

Leading the way for the scoring for the Chargers was the defending boys pole vault champion, Wes Sun.  Wes successfully defended his title with a vault of 12' 6", with twin brother, Curtis taking the runner-up position in 11'6".  Junior co-captain Josh Trikakis also added a 5th place finish, in 10 '0", earning a trip to regionals.  Senior Robert Herrity also earned all-district honors in the long jump, with a personal best leap of 19' 7", good enough for 4th place.  Herrity also ran the fastest time in the 55m Hurdles in a regionally qualifying time of 8.23, earning him a spot in next week's finals. Wes Sun also earned a place in the finals with the 5th fastest qualifying time.  Senior Eric Palmer earned a repeat all-district finish in the 1600m run, with a 5th place of 4:34.84.  The final points came from the 4th place of the boys 4x800m relay team, consisting of Palmer, seniors Mike Holton and Bryce Cowett, and junior Wilson "Bowflex" Bever. In addition, senior Bugsy Urrutia ran the 2nd fastest qualifying time for next week's 55m dash finals, and will be joined by junior E.J. Salas, who was 6th.

The girls had their highlights of the evening.  Junior Lia DiValentin was involved in perhaps the most exciting event of the evening, the 1600m run.  As she has all season, she competed against the best in the state, and defended her reputation as one of the best in the discipline.  Battling against two opponents from Westfield and Herndon, Lia took them to the line, finishing in a close 2nd place, in a time which places her among the top 5 in the state in the event.  Senior Leah Soukup also provided scoring with a 3rd place finish in the high jump.  After consistantly hitting her PR best of 4'6" all season, Soukup finally came through when it counted most, and earned her trip to regionals with a jump of 4' 8".  Freshman Amira Idris also earned district honors in her first district meet, finishing 5th in the long jump in 15' 6.75". The Chargers look to continue their strong meet next week, as all three participants in the girls 55m Hurdles advanced to the finals, with Kim Weinberg (4th -9.88), Lily Wang (5th- 10.17) and Kaitlyn Manley (6th- 10.28).

The 2nd and final day of the championship will take place next Thursday, February 7th, also at the PG Sports & Learning Complex.
