The Chantilly Varsity Softball Team earned its first district win on the road Friday night with a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Oakton Cougars. Playing through rain for most of the contest, the Lady Chargers did not let the weather deter them from playing flawless defense against a talented Oakton squad. Wendy Sloan thwarted a potential Oakton rally in the fifth inning by catching a sinking liner to center, throwing to second base and doubling up the Oakton runner to end the inning. Tori Doherty did the same in the sixth inning as she threw out the potential go-ahead runner trying to steal second base. The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning until Alex Sallberg drove in Bryanna Kerbuski on a fielder's choice with two outs to give Chantilly a 1-0 lead. Emily Gembarowicz finished off her stellar pitching performance (12 strikeouts, 4 singles allowed) by shutting down the Lady Cougars in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal the victory.
With a record of 5-5, the Lady Chargers return home Tuesday night to face the Centreville Wildcats at 6:30 pm.
