Boys Varsity Soccer beats Oakton 2-0 on Senior Night

The Boys Varsity Soccer Team was back in form Friday night to celebrate Senior Night with a 2-0 victory over rival Oakton HS at home.  An impressive crowd was on hand for numerous events at the high school and none who stopped by the soccer pitch went begging.  The game involved goals, send-offs, cautions, free kicks, combination passing, and intensity characteristic of the Concorde District.  And in the midst of it all were Chantilly’s five seniors.

Manager Caroline Boulanger, Goalie Seeho Lee, and captains Mo Fasihi, Colin Eadie, and Scott Garrison were all announced prior to the start of the match and congratulated by the crowd.  Lee played big all night in net earning his third victory and shutout of the season.  Lee’s five saves came mostly in the second half from the pressing Cougars.  Fasihi was involved in making runs and marking on the flanks all game long.  Twice Fasihi left the game with injuries returning to action in each case.  Eadie maintained high-pressure on the Cougars back four all game long and created several good opportunities for the Chargers including a first half assist.  Garrison ran at center back for the full time organizing the backline and playing prototypical tough defense.  Although the seniors concluded their last career regular season game under the lights on Stringfellow, there is still possibility of a home district playoff game once the standings solidify.

While the night belonged to the seniors, the stat sheet was controlled by three sophomores among the Chantilly ranks.  Late in the first half, forward Jamal Umar corralled a long ball sent (by Eadie) down the right sideline near the corner of the box before seemingly mishandling his dribble.  As the Oakton defender attempted to capitalize, Umar sent a screamer from his right boot into the upper side-netting of the goal, electrifying the crowd, and earning the eventual game-winner.  The Chargers struck again in the middle of the second frame off of a set piece.  Captain Steven Mashinski sent his signature bending ball into the box to find the outstretched foot of classmate Kevin McBride.  McBride’s midair volley into the net gave the fans some breathing room until the referee’s final whistle.

The Chargers play their final two regular season games away on Monday and Tuesday against Centreville and Westfield (previously ranked #1 in the Washington Post) respectively.
