The Boys Varsity Soccer Team upset the Washington Post’s third ranked Robinson Rams 1-0 away last Thursday night. Junior Ryan Abbott redirected a free kick with only 45 seconds remaining to net the game winner. The free kick opportunity was won when sophomore winger Chris Din outmaneuvered a Robinson defender, forcing the takedown just outside the penalty area. Sophomore captain Steven Mashinski served up the set piece to Abbott with a bending ball from the top left corner of the area.
Chantilly overcame distractions prior to the game including a broken-down bus en route to the game and Robinson’s senior night ceremony. The Charger midfield led by sophomores Jamal Umar, Kevin McBride, Chaz Ashton, Ali Ismeail, and Mashinski stepped up to match Robinson’s physicality all game long. The Charger defense, led by senior captain and field general Scott Garrison, shutdown a very strong Ram’s offense turning back more than double Chantilly’s opportunities. The timely shutout earned by senior Goalie Seeho Lee is his second clean sheet on the season. Key minutes by juniors Jimmy Balladares, Erdi Halici, Abaleng Manteng, and Nick Hargreaves, and senior captain Mo Fasihi helped maintain Chantilly’s intensity.
Every member of the team put in a fine performance to earn the result and move Chantilly to a 2-1 record in district play. The Chargers play at home and celebrate senior night against Oakton this upcoming Friday night (May 2nd).
