The Varsity Chantilly Chargers hit for the cycle Tuesday night, defeating the Herndon Hornets 5-4. The Chargers' 5 hits consisted of singles by shortstop Danny Bates and first baseman Brian King, a double by second baseman Roger Strittmatter, a triple by DH Adam Fridy, and a home run over the center field fence by left fielder Kevin McGrath. Starting pitcher Jordan Johnson went 5 innings for the win. Chantilly got on the board in the 2nd inning after Adam Fridy's triple scored Brian King. A grounder by Kevin McGrath then scored Fridy. In the top of the 5th inning Herndon loaded the bases with no outs. A sparkling "long arm" double play by Danny Bates (4-6, followed by a pickoff of the lead runner on third) held them to only 2 runs. In the 5th inning McGrath's lead-off home run, Strittmatter's double, a reach-on-error by right fielder Tim Bollinger, and Danny Bates's RBI single added 3 more Charger runs. In the top of the 7th the Hornets threatened again with 2 men on and 1 out. A key defensive play by Brian King added another out without allowing either runner to score. An RBI single and a passed ball then allowed Herndon to score 2 runs, but a ground out to second ended the game. Charger offense also included a walk by Brian King, a sac bunt by Tim Bollinger, and stolen bases by Bollinger and third baseman Nick Kralles. In 5 innings Jordan Johnson struck out 3, while giving up 2 walks, 4 hits, and 2 runs. Junior Bill Boyle pitched 2 innings in relief, striking out 4 while allowing 2 hits and 2 runs. The Chargers next play Fairfax at Fairfax on Friday at 6:30 PM.
