The Varsity Chantilly Chargers won their first Concorde District game
against the Centreville Wildcats Friday night, 3-1 in 8 innings. The
game, a pitching duel through the first 5 innings, was finally decided
by timely Charger hitting and a couple of fielding errors by the
Wildcats in the 8th.
Chantilly got on the board in the first inning on a single by shortstop
Danny Bates, a walk by catcher Matt Dewitt, and a reach-on-error by left
fielder Adam Fridy. Centreville responded in the 2nd inning with a run
of their own. For the next 4 innings Chantilly starting pitcher John
Colella held the Wildcats scoreless. In the top of the 7th Chantilly
threatened to score after loading the bases with 1 out. But a strikeout
and ground out ended the inning. In the top of the 8th the leadoff
hitter, third baseman Nick Kralles, reached first on an error. Junior
Bill Boyle bunted him to second, and then second baseman Roger
Strittmatter blasted an RBI single to right field. After right fielder
Tim Bollinger reached first on another fielding error, center fielder
Joe Danehower hit a sac fly to right field, scoring Roger Strittmatter
from third. In the bottom of the 8th Centreville had runners on 2nd and
3rd with 1 out, but Chantilly was able to retire the side on a 3-2
double play.
Starting pitcher John Colella pitched 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 2
hits. He struck out 6 while walking 2. Bill Boyle picked up the win
pitching 2 innings in relief, with 1 strikeout and 1 hit.
The following Chantilly batters drew walks: Matt Dewitt(2), Brian King,
Nick Kralles, and Roger Strittmatter. The Chargers also had 6 hits: a
double by Tim Bollinger, and singles by Danny Bates(2), Joe Danehower,
Brian King, and Roger Strittmatter. Both Adam Fridy and Bill Boyle hit
sac bunts.
Special recognition should go to Joe Danehower, whose 15 pitch at-bat in
the 5th inning helped to knock the Centreville starting pitcher out of
the game early.
Chantilly plays Herndon next Tuesday at 6:30 PM at home.
