In a game shortened by the slaughter rule, the Varsity Chantilly Chargers defeated the Edison Eagles 14-4 tonight, using a combination of strong pitching and strong hitting. Junior starter Jordan Johnson picked up the win, going 4 innings, giving up only 1 run. The Charger offense produced 12 hits, including a 3 run home run by catcher Matt Dewitt. The Chargers are now 2-0. Though the Eagles scored first in the bottom of the 1st inning, the Chargers quickly responded in the 2nd. After a walk by first baseman Brian King, a hit-by-pitch by DH Kevin McGrath, and an infield single by third baseman Nick Kralles, second baseman Roger Strittmatter hit a sac fly to deep center field for the Chargers first run. Immediately afterwards, right fielder Tim Bollinger slammed a triple to center, clearing the bases. In the next inning Matt Dewitt hit a line drive which struck the Eagle starting pitcher's pitching hand, taking him out of the game. After that the Eagle bullpen struggled. The Chargers scored 5 runs in the 4th inning, 2 in the 5th, and 2 more in the 6th. The Eagles rallied in the 5th to score 3 runs, but were shut down in the 6th on two fly balls and a strikeout. Contributing to the Charger offense were: stolen bases by sophomore Jamie Danehower and Roger Strittmatter, walks by center fielder Joe Danehower, senior Adam Petrelle, Brian King, and Tim Bollinger, and a sac bunt by Joe Danehower. At the plate Matt Dewitt was 2 for 3 with a home run and 2 RBI's, shortstop Danny Bates was 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI, and sophomore third baseman Ben Langford was 2 for 2 with a double and an RBI. Junior Mike Miller had a double with 2 RBI's and Tim Bollinger had a triple with an RBI. Also contributing hits were sophomore Jamie Danehower, Brian King, Nick Kralles, and Roger Strittmatter. Starting pitcher Jordan Johnson struck out 6, giving up 1 walk, two hits, and a run. Junior C.J. Irwin pitched two innings in relief, striking out 2, walking 2, and giving up 2 hits. The Chargers play at Centreville on Friday at 6:30 PM.
