YORKTOWN HIGH: 1
Chantilly's varsity baseball team won its opener tonight 5-1 against the
Yorktown Patriots. The Chargers banged out 8 hits, including 2 home
runs. Starting pitcher John Colella earned his first win, pitching 1-hit
ball through 6 innings.
Third baseman Nick Kralles started the Charger rally in the 5th inning
by crushing a ball to right center field for a double. Right fielder Tim
Bollinger then singled to center field to drive in the first run. After
Tim Bollinger stole second and center fielder Joe Danehower drew a walk,
catcher Matt Dewitt launched an 0-1 pitch over the right field fence for
a 3-run home run. No sooner had he cleared the bases when first baseman
Brian King also went yard, clearing the fence in center field. That was
all that the Chargers needed. The Patriots rallied briefly in the 7th
inning, scoring a run on 2 hits, but were quickly retired on 2 grounders
and a fly ball.
Starting pitcher John Colella went 6 innings, giving up 1 walk and 1 hit
while striking out 8. Junior Bill Boyle pitched an inning in relief,
giving up 2 hits and one run.
Nick Kralles led the offense, going 2 for 3, including a double. Matt
Dewitt and Brian King were both 1 for 3, each with a home run. Also
contributing hits were shortstop Danny Bates, DH Adam Fridy, left
fielder Kevin McGrath, and Tim Bollinger.
The Chargers play away at Edison at 6 PM on Tuesday.
