BETHEL HIGH SCHOOL: 4

(Norfolk, Virginia) – A season to remember for the Chantilly varsity baseball team ended last Tuesday with a 4-2 loss to Bethel in the state tournament quarterfinals at Old Dominion University. Despite the defeat, the 2008 Chargers squad had an unprecedented run, capturing the Concorde District Title, reaching the Region Final, and for the first time in school history competing in the State Tournament.

Chantilly’s final game saw Bethel jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning as the Bruins’ lead-off hitter Jamie Scott reached on an infield hit and advanced to third on a bouncing ground ball single through the right side by third baseman Zack Sanders. After the Chargers’ starting pitcher Patrick Somers picked off Sanders for the first out, Bethel’s Kizuku Scott followed with a base hit to right field bringing in the game’s first run. The Chargers knotted the score in the 3rd inning when third baseman Max Langford crushed a 2-1 fastball for a lead-off solo home run to left field. The game remained tied until the bottom of the 5th inning when Bethel first two hitters led off with singles to left. Both runners would come around to eventually score in the inning on a wild pitch and passed ball, giving the Bruins a 3-1 lead. Chantilly mounted a rally in the 6th, as shortstop Chris Yates reached on an error, advanced to 3rd base on Brian King’s double down the left field line, and scored on Brandon Beckner’s fielder’s choice. But the Chargers could not muster any additional runs, stranding base runners on first and third to end the inning. Bethel tacked on an insurance run in their half of the 6th, as outfielder Jesse Wyatt tripled over the bag at first base to lead off the inning, and scored on Jamie Scott’s bloop single over second base. Bethel’s starting pitcher, Justin Shively, retired the Chargers in order in the top of the 7th inning to seal the state quarterfinal win.

Chantilly was led offensively in the game by Max Langford, who was 2 for 4 with a home run and RBI. Brandon Beckner was 1 for 3 with an RBI, Brian King had a double, and Chris Gentile, Keith Morrisroe and Chris Yates all contributed base hits. The Chargers’ Patrick Somers went the distance on the mound, scattering 12 hits, giving up 2 earned runs, no walks and striking out 5.

The Chargers end their 2008 season with an overall record of 18-8, a 9-3 record in the Concorde District regular season, and a 12-3 mark through the District tournament.  In their post-season run through the District, Regional and State tournaments the team compiled a 5-2 record.
