Varsity Baseball – Lake Braddock Rallies to Down Chargers 9-6 in Northern Region Championship Game

Game Date
May 30, 2008
Score
CHARGERS: 6

(Arlington, VA)Despite three home runs and a 6-3 lead going in to the 5th inning, Chantilly could not overcome a Lake Braddock rally aided by a wind-blown pop-up and lost Friday night 9-6 in the Northern Region championship game held at Yorktown High School. The Chargers still advance for the first time in school history to the AAA state baseball championship tournament by virtue of finishing second in the Region, and square off against Bethel, the Eastern Region champion, Tuesday night at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.Friday night’s game saw Chantilly take an early 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning as second baseman Danny Bates singled to center, stole second, and scored on a throwing error by Lake Braddock’s shortstop on third baseman Max Langford’s ground ball. Lake Braddock claimed the lead in their half of the 3rd on a two-run single by Bruins’ first baseman Jim Buckley after a Chantilly infield error, a double and a hit batter. Chantilly evened the score in the 4th as left fielder Patrick Moore teed off on the first pitch he saw, launching a home run to straight-away center field. Shortstop Chris Yates followed with a four pitch walk, and first baseman Brian King brought him home with a towering homer to left field on a 3-2 fastball to give the Chargers a 4-2 lead. Lake Braddock’s Ryan Buckdrop got a run back with a solo homer in the bottom of the 4th to narrow the margin to 4-3.
The Chargers added to their lead in the top of the 5th inning as center fielder Chris Gentile led off with a single to center field, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on the Chargers’ third home run of the game as catcher Keith Morrisroe belted a 2-0 offering over the fence in right. In the bottom of the 5th the first two Bruins were retired on a liner to third and a routine grounder to short. However, two walks and a single plated a run to draw Lake Braddock to within two runs, 6-4, and the next batter was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. On a 3-2 count the Bruins’ number two hitter, Shane Halley, hit a sky-high pop up to the right side of the infield that was lost in the lights and wind-blown, eluding Chantilly’s infielders and enabling all three base runners to score. Lake Braddock’s Shannon Mark followed with a two-run home run to finish the inning’s scoring. The Chargers mounted a rally in the 7th inning, as Chris Gentile and Keith Morrisroe both singled and Patrick Moore was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out. But the Bruins reliever, Ryan Lindemuth, retired the final two Chantilly batters to end the game.
Chantilly’s 10-hit offense was led by All Region catcher Keith Morrisroe, who was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 RBIs, Brian King, who was 2 for 4 with a homer and 2 RBIs, and Chris Gentile, who was 2 for 4 with a run scored.   Patrick Moore was 1 for 2 with a home run, and Chris Yates and Danny Bates had base hits for the Chargers.
The Chargers’ starting pitcher, Jordan Johnson, went 2 2/3 innings, giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, with 3 strikeouts. Chris Yates went two innings of relief, and Max Langford finished the game with 1 1/3 innings in relief of Yates.
The Chargers are now 18-7 on the season, and begin play in the AAA Virginia state baseball championship tournament Tuesday evening at 6 pm at Old Dominion University.
