Varsity Baseball - Chargers Are Concorde Champions!

Game Date
May 19, 2008
Score
CHARGERS: 5

(Chantilly, VA)First baseman Brian King hit a two-run home run in the 6th inning and starting pitcher Jordan Johnson went five strong innings as the Chargers defeated Oakton Monday night in the Concorde District championship game for Chantilly’s first District title since 1991. The Chargers now advance to the Northern Region tournament as the number one seed out of the District.

The game – featuring the Concorde regular season first and second place teams – was scoreless through 4 innings as Chantilly’s Johnson and Oakton’s Kevin Wager each yielded only one hit.  After allowing a single to lead off the game, Johnson retired 12 consecutive Oakton batters.  The Chargers drew first blood in the 5th inning as shortstop Chris Yates led off the inning with a line single to left field. First baseman Brian King followed with a bunt base hit. An errant throw to first by Oakton’s Wager on Justin Carwile’s tapper to the left side of the mound then scored Yates for the first run of the game. Second baseman Danny Bates followed with a double to deep right center scoring King, and third baseman Max Langford brought in the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left.

Oakton clawed back in the bottom of the 5th on a hit batter and two walks, followed by a sacrifice fly from designated hitter Trevor Falk and a 2-RBI double by catcher Keith Werman. Chantilly retook the lead for good in the 6th inning. The Chargers’ left fielder Patrick Moore reached on a one-out single to left, but was erased on a fielder’s choice.  Brian King followed, and on the first pitch from Wager he drove a fastball over the scoreboard in right center to re-take the lead 5-3 for Chantilly. Senior right hander Chris Yates came in to relieve Johnson and shut down the heart of the Oakton batting order with two shut-out innings in the 6th and 7th to seal the victory.

Chantilly was led at the plate by Brian King, who was 2 for 3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Danny Bates had a double and an RBI, and Max Langford drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. Keith Morrisroe, Chris Yates, and Patrick Moore all had base hits for the Chargers. Starting pitcher Johnson went 5 innings, giving up 3 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. Yates went 2 innings, giving up no hits and no runs for the save.

The Chargers are now 15-6 overall and 11-3 in the Concorde District. They begin Northern Region tournament play Friday night at home against Mount Vernon High School, the number four seed out of the National District.
