Varsity Baseball – Chargers Win Extra Inning Thriller 3-2 in Concorde Semi-Finals

(Chantilly, VA) – Left-hander Patrick Somers provided a 3-hit, 11 strikeout performance and junior second baseman Danny Bates singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning to give Chantilly a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon over Westfield in the Concorde District semi-finals. The Chargers now advance to the District championship game Monday to face Oakton, a winner over Robinson in the other District semi-final match.
Chantilly took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning on an RBI double by catcher Keith Morrisroe and a run-scoring single by designated hitter Will Christopher. Chantilly maintained the lead as the Chargers’ starting pitcher Somers took a no-hitter into the 6th inning, retiring 15 of the first 17 batters he faced. After a strikeout to begin the inning, Somers walked Westfield’s lead-off hitter Kevin Reardon, and on a 1-2 count gave up a 2-run home run to the Bulldogs’ Matt Snyder that tied the game. That would be all the scoring for Westfield on the day as the Chargers played flawless defense behind Somers, including left fielder Justin Carwile’s throw to home in the 7th to nail Westfield’s Hayden Ferington who represented the go-ahead run.
Chantilly was led at the plate by Keith Morrisroe, who was 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI, and Justin Carwile, who was 2 for 4 and who ignited the two-out 9th inning Charger rally with a base hit to right field and scored the winning run. Will Christopher had an RBI base hit, and Max Langford, Chris Yates, Brian King and Danny Bates all contributed hits. The Chargers’ starting pitcher Pat Somers went 9 innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 11 strikeouts.
The Chargers are now 14-6 overall and 10-3 in Concorde District play. They play Oakton Monday at 6:30 pm at Westfield High School for the Concorde District tournament championship.
