(Chantilly, VA) – Chantilly’s varsity baseball team went into its final regular season game against Westfield Wednesday night with a chance to clinch the Concorde District title, but fell to the Bulldogs 8-7 in a hard-fought contest that saw the lead change five times.
Westfield jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning on a double, a single, and a 3-run home run by the Bulldog’s third baseman Mike Snyder. The Chargers came back in the bottom of the 2nd inning to plate five runs and take the lead. Two infield errors by Westfield and a single by first baseman Brian King loaded the bases for Chantilly. Walks to shortstop Danny Bates and centerfielder Chris Gentile brought in the first two Charger runs. An RBI single from third baseman Max Langford, a sacrifice fly by catcher Keith Morrisroe, and a fielder’s choice by designated hitter Will Christopher rounded out the scoring in the inning and gave Chantilly a 5-3 lead.
Westfield got a run back in the top of the 3rd inning on a lead-off solo home run by Westfield first baseman Matt Snyder, and retook a 6-5 lead in the 4th on three Chantilly infield errors and two base hits. The lead shifted back to Chantilly in the bottom of the inning as Max Langford came through with a two-out single to left and was brought home on an RBI triple to right center by Keith Morrisroe.
Chantilly’s lead held up until the 7th inning. The Charger’s Patrick Somers, who came in to relieve in the 5th inning, had the Bulldogs down to their final out with men on 1st and 2nd base and a 2-2 count on Westfield’s Matt Snyder. But Snyder lined the next offering to left center, scoring both base runners to regain the lead for Westfield 8-7. The Chargers rallied to threaten in the bottom of the 7th on a double by Brian King, a walk to right fielder Justin Carwile, and a wild pitch which advanced the runners to second and third base. Pinch hitter Brandon Beckner laced the second pitch he saw down the left field line for what appeared to be a game-winning double, but the home plate umpire called the ball foul. A ground ball to shortstop provided the third out and ended the game.
Chantilly was led at the plate by Max Langford, who was 3 for 4 with an RBI, Keith Morrisroe, who was 2 for 3 with a triple and 2 RBIs, and Brian King, who was 2 for 4 with a double. Justin Carwile also contributed a base hit. The Chargers’ starting pitcher senior Chris Yates went 3 innings giving up 4 runs on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts. Junior John Collela went 1 2/3 innings in relief giving up 2 unearned runs and 2 hits with 2 strikeouts. Senior left hander Patrick Somers went 2 1/3 innings and took the loss, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts.
The Chargers ended the regular season in second place in the Concorde District with a 9-3 record and a 13-6 overall mark, and are the second seed in the Concorde District tournament, which starts Monday. Chantilly plays next on Friday in the District semifinals.
