(Fairfax, VA) – Catcher Keith Morrisroe went 5 for 5 with 5 runs batted in and starting pitcher Max Langford had a strong outing as the Chargers varsity baseball squad beat Fairfax 12-3 Friday night, completing a season sweep over the Rebels.
The Chargers -- who garnered 13 hits on the night -- began the game loading the bases in the top of the 1st, but were unable to score. The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in their half of the frame, scoring one run on two base hits and a walk. Chantilly knotted the score in the 3rd on catcher Keith Morrisroe’s lead-off infield single and two Rebel errors. Fairfax regained the lead in the bottom of the 3rd on an infield error and a 2-run home run. The Chargers came back to tie it in the 4th inning on a lead-off walk to shortstop Danny Bates, an infield base hit by pitcher Max Langford, and a two-run triple to center field by Morrisroe.
Chantilly put the game away in the 5th inning, exploding for 6 runs. Left fielder Patrick Moore led off the inning with a double off the wall in deep center. After a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Brandon Beckner advanced Moore to third, first baseman Brian King and shortstop Danny Bates both drew walks to load the bases. Pinch hitter Chris Yates followed with a sacrifice fly to right field scoring a run. A bunt single by center fielder Chris Gentile loaded the bases again, and Langford’s third hit of the game plated the second run of the inning. Morrisroe, the Chargers’ leading hitter, followed with his fourth hit, a two-RBI single. The inning was capped by Will Christopher’s double to deep center which scored Chantilly’s final 2 runs of the inning.
The Chargers offense was led by Keith Morrisroe, who had a perfect night at the plate going 5 for 5 with a triple and 5 RBIs. Max Langford was 4 for 5 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Will Christopher doubled and drove in 2 runs, Patrick Moore doubled and scored a run, Danny Bates reached base four times scoring two runs with 3 walks, a single, and a stolen base, and Chris Gentile contributed a hit, two runs scored and a stolen base. Chris Yates drove in the go-ahead run for the Chargers with a sacrifice fly. Chantilly’s starter, Max Langford, pitched 5 strong innings, giving up 4 hits, 3 walks, 2 earned runs, and striking out 9. Junior left-hander Jordan Johnson threw two innings in relief giving up 1 hit and striking out 3.
The win puts the Chargers at 12-4 on the season and 8-1 in the Concorde District with three games remaining. The victory extends Chantilly’s current winning streak to five consecutive games and 10 out of their last 11. They play at home against Robinson next Friday at 6:30 pm.
