Boys Varsity Baseball vs. OAKTON HS

Game Date
Apr 13, 2012
Score
CHARGERS: 3
OAKTON HIGH: 2

Cory Donovan went 2 for 2 with 3 RBI, and Tom Wood and Chris Fraser combined to hold Oakton to five hits, as the Chantilly Chargers beat the Oakton Cougars 3-2 on Friday night.  Chantilly defeated the Cougars with 8 hits, strong defensive play, solid pitching, and a fortuitous bounce to move to 9-2 on the season.

Oakton opened the game with a single and a walk.  Then, the Cougars’ #3 hitter smashed a line drive directly to 2B Jake Acosta, who caught the ball and stepped on 2nd base for a double play.  The next batter flared a double to right field, and Oakton led the game 1-0 after 1 inning.

The Cougars threatened again in the 2nd inning with a single and walk, but the Oakton rally ended with a 6-4-3 double play that included a nice run-saving scoop from 1B Casey Gittings.  In the bottom of the 2nd, Eason Recto walked and Acosta singled to left with one out.  Cory Donovan then pounded an RBI single through the shortstop hole to score Recto and tie the game 1-1.

Oakton’s leadoff batter in the 3rd reached on a walk, but catcher Kevin Johnston nailed the runner trying to steal second and Wood got the next two batters on ground outs.  Oakton again singled to open the 4th inning but after a fly out, 1B Casey Gittings made an acrobatic catch of a ball over his head and then beat the runner back to the bag for a double play.

In the bottom of 4th, Sonny Romine led off with a single to left.  After two outs, Gittings singled to right and moved to second on a wild pitch.  With men on second and third and two outs, Cory Donovan hit a soft line drive toward the hole between short and third.  The Oakton third baseman leapt high in the air and tipped the ball, which deflected directly into the shortstop’s forehead and then bounced into foul territory – allowing both runners to score.  Oakton’s unfortunate bounce became a two run single by Donovan, and Chantilly led 3-1.

It stayed that way until the 7th.  Wood started off the inning walking the #5 hitter for Oakton, and Fraser came in to relieve him.  A single and a sacrifice bunt put men on 2nd and 3rd with only one out.  A soft fly that the Chargers couldn’t handle allowed a run to score, and it was 3-2, still with only one out.  Fraser induced the next hitter to fly to shallow right, too short for the runner on third to try and tie the game.  And with the bases loaded and two outs, Fraser got the #2 hitter of the Cougars to fly to Romine in left, and the game was over.

The Chargers offense had 8 hits and a walk in the game.  In addition to Donovan’s 2 hits and 3 RBI, Mike Sciorra had a hit and a stolen base.  Tommy Vance had a single, as did Kevin Johnston, Jake Acosta, and Sonny Romine.  Eason Recto had 2 runs, 1 single, and a walk.  1B Casey Gittings had a single and the winning run scored.  Tom Wood threw 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 4 walks, striking out 1 and allowing 2 runs to get the win.  Chris Fraser got the save by making good pitches through Oakton’s boisterous rally in the 7th.

Chantilly (9-2) faces off against Herndon at 6:30 on Tuesday at Herndon, and plays Robinson Friday night at Robinson.
