Boys Varsity Baseball vs. WESTFIELD HS

Game Date
Apr 10, 2012
Score
CHARGERS: 4
WESTFIELD HIGH: 3

Caleb Reinhardt led Chantilly to a hard fought, come-from-behind 4-3 win over Westfield on a cold, windy night at Westfield.  Down 3-2, Tommy Vance led off the 7th with a double down the 3rd base line, and Kevin Johnston followed with a rocket over the center fielder to tie the game.  Sonny Romine then came through with the winning RBI with a clean single up the middle.  Westfield got to Reinhardt for 6 hits and 3 runs in the first two innings, but the Chantilly senior never backed down and settled into a groove striking out 5 and allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk in the final 5 innings to get the complete game win.

Chantilly was frustrated early, scoring no runs in the first 3 innings despite consistently getting runners into scoring position.  Westfield, on the other hand, strung together several hits to plate 3 runners in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Catcher Kevin Johnston helped keep the Bulldog rally to just 3 runs in the 2nd, first by catching a popped up bunt and then by throwing out a runner attempting to steal 2nd base.

In the Charger 4th, Eason Recto led off with a walk and then Jake Acosta singled to left field and, with two on and 0 outs the Chargers appeared to be ready to cut into Westfield’s 3-0 lead.    But once again, the Bulldogs dodged a bullet and got out of the inning without allowing a run.  The only good news for the frustrated Chargers was that Reinhardt was looking strong on the mound, and the next inning was the 5th, where so far this season good things have happened for Chantilly.

Mike Sciorra led off the 5th with a single and stole 2nd base.  Tommy Vance followed with a hard single to right and the Chargers had runners at 1st and 3rd.  Kevin Johnston drove home Sciorra with a groundout, and Sam Hellman followed with a single to push Vance to 3rd base.  Eason Recto then singled home Vance and the Chargers had closed the lead to 3-2, setting up their exciting 7th inning rally.  After walking Westfield’s leadoff batter in the bottom of 7th inning, Reinhardt finished strong getting 2 ground balls to Acosta at 2nd base and then a fly out to Romine in left to close the game out.

Chantilly’s offense was led by Tommy Vance (2B, 1B, BB, 2 runs), Mike Sciorra (2 1B, BB, SB, run), and Kevin Johnston (2B, BB, 2 RBI, run).  The Chargers also got contributions from Sonny Romine (1B, RBI), Jake Acosta (1B, BB, HBP), Eason Recto (1B, BB), Sam Hellman (1B), and Casey Gittings (BB).

Chantilly (8-2) next hosts Oakton at 6:30 on Friday night.
