Caleb Reinhardt threw a complete game 2 hit shutout on Friday night, leading Chantilly to a 6-0 win over the Stone Bridge Bulldogs. The Chargers pounded out nine hits overall, including three triples, and once again combined strong, efficient pitching effort with timely defense to win its second game of the season. Sonny Romine led the Chantilly offense going 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, while Mike Sciorra and Tommy Vance chipped in with two hits each, and Casey Gittings had 2 RBI. But it was the crafty Reinhardt who earned MVP of the game, allowing only four baserunners through six innings, and shutting down the visiting Bulldogs when they threatened in the 7th.
Solid pitching and defense from Stone Bridge kept Chantilly in check for the first three innings. But Romine led off the bottom of the fourth by beating out a slow roller to third. Tommy Vance followed with a one out single through the hole at short, and Aaron Osborne sacrificed both runners over. Then, with 2 outs, Casey Gittings lined a 2 RBI single to left center, giving Chantilly a 2-0 lead.
In the 5th, the Chargers found their power stroke. Mike Sciorra started off the inning by crushing a ball over the centerfielder’s head, ending up on third base. After an out, Sam Hellman walked, and then a passed ball allowed Sciorra to score and Hellman to move over to second. Cleanup hitter Romine then followed Sciorra’s lead, and hit a ball into the gap in right center, for the second triple of the inning, and Chantilly was up 4-0. Eason Recto followed with a drive into left center, scoring Romine, and after the third triple of the inning, it was 5-0.
Stone Bridge’s leadoff hitter in the top of the sixth broke up Reinhardt’s no hitter with a ground single between short and third. Caleb had been extremely efficient through five innings, needing only 56 pitches to get through 15 outs. The Bulldog’s hopes to get back in the game were quickly extinguished with an Acosta to Vance to Gittings (4-6-3) doubleplay. After a hard groundout to second, Reinhardt was out of the inning with only 8 pitches. In the bottom half of the sixth, Sciorra singled to right leading off, and stole second. With two outs, Romine again came through with an RBI single to right center, and the sixth run crossed the plate.
Things were alittle rocky for Chantilly in the 7th. The leadoff Stone Bridge batter hit a flare single to left, followed by a strikeout looking and a popout to second. With two outs, a walk and an error loaded the bases. Reinhardt bore down, however, and induced a grounder to short on his 23rd pitch of the inning, closing out the 6-0 win.
The 2-0 Chargers play at Forest Park on Tuesday Night.
