The Chantilly Chargers Varsity Baseball team started off their 2012 season with a 7-0 shutout of the Edison Eagles. Starting pitcher Chris Fraser shut down Edison over 6 innings, throwing 4 hit ball and getting the win. Fraser got all the help he needed in the second inning, when 3B Sam Hellman hit a long HR to left center for the first Charger hit of the season and a 1-0 Chantilly lead. The Chargers had 10 hits in total, including 2 each by Daniel Speed, Sonny Romine, and Eason Recto. Casey Gittings’ 2 run single in the 6th effectively put the game away, and Chantilly’s and pitching closed the game out.
CHS put two runs on the board in the 2nd, scoring on Hellman’s blast and Daniel Speed’s infield single. The Chargers had 4 hits in the inning, as Romine followed Hellman with an infield single, and Tommy Vance lined a single to center. Gittings then walked and Speed singled to short to score Vance and CHS lead 2-0.
Fraser cruised through the first 4 innings, throwing only 29 pitches, and got strong defensive plays by Jake Acosta (2B) and Gittings (1B) sandwiched around 4 strikeouts. In the 5th, Edison finally got to the Chantilly starter, and loaded the bases with 2 hits and a walk. Fraser bore down and got the Eagles’ #9 hitter to pop to first, however, and the Chargers were out of the jam.
In the bottom of the 5th, Mike Sciorra led off with a single, stole second, and scored on an error when Edison’s 2B couldn’t handle a throw to first on a Jake Acosta sacrifice bunt. It was 3-0 CHS after 5 innings.
Chantilly finally put the game away in the bottom of the 6th. Romine and Recto led off the inning with singles, and Vance sacrificed them over. Casey Gittings followed with a single to right center, scoring both runners, and took second on the throw. Daniel Speed followed with another RBI single, his second of the night, giving CHS a 6-0 lead. The final run came when Speed scored on a wild pitch. Eason Recto came on to relieve Fraser in the top of the 7th, striking out 2 of the 3 batters he faced, and Chantilly had their first win of the season.
The Chargers played solid defense all night (0 errors) and Chris Fraser opened the 2012 season with a strong pitching performance. He threw 68 pitches (51 for strikes) over 6 innings, struck out 5 Eagles, and walked only 1.
Friday night the Chargers (1-0) take on Stonebridge at home at 6:00 PM.
