Varsity Baseball – Chargers Trump Bulldogs 4-1

(Chantilly, VA) – Junior Roger Strittmatter homered and left-hander Patrick Somers struck out 10 as Chantilly beat Westfield 4-1 Wednesday night and pulled into a tie for first place in the Concorde District.

The Chargers struck first in the top of the 2^nd inning as left fielder Pat Moore doubled over the third base bag, Danny Phillips singled, and the Bulldogs committed a throwing error. Westfield came back in the bottom of the 3^rd inning to knot the score with a lead-off double, a sacrifice bunt, and a ground out to plate the run. But that would be all the scoring for the Bulldogs, as Chantilly’s Somers shut them down, giving up only one additional hit over the next 4 innings. The Chargers added three more runs in the 5^th inning, as second baseman Roger Strittmatter led off with a home run to left field, Keith Morrisroe had an RBI double, and Pat Moore added a run with a sacrifice fly to deep right.

Chantilly’s offense was led by Danny Phillips who was 2 for 3 on the night, Keith Morrisroe who was 2 for 4 with a double and RBI, and Roger Strittmatter, who was 1 for 3 with a home run. Pat Moore doubled and drove in a run. The Chargers’ starter, Pat Somers, pitched a complete game, giving up 5 hits, 2 walks, 1 earned run, and striking out 10 Bulldogs.

The Chargers are now 9-4 on the season and 5-1 in the Concorde District, tying them for first place with Westfield and Oakton. They play at Centreville on Friday night at 6:30 pm.
