In the bottom of the 8th inning of last night's Senior Night Varsity baseball game against Westfield, the score was tied at 5-5. Sam Zimmerman, Chantilly's leadoff batter, slammed a monstrous triple to right center field. After a strike out, the Westfield coach quickly motioned to have the next two batters intentionally walked, loading the bases. The next pitch, to batter Connor Major, went wild. Zimmerman charged home and scored, sliding under the tag. Final score was 6-5.
Chantilly's other scores were not quite as dramatic. A leadoff single by Brian Morrow in the 2nd set up a 2 run home run by Sonny Romine, over the center field fence. Back-to-back singles in the 4th inning by Collin Ryan and Ben Langford, a sac bunt by Kevin Johnston, and then two more back-to-back singles, by Sam Zimmerman and Brian Morrow, added 2 more runs. In the 4th inning a 2-out double by Jamie Danehower and an RBI single by Collin Ryan added one more.
Contributing to Chantilly's offense were Sonny Romine (home run, walk, 2 RBI), Sam Zimmerman (triple, single, RBI), Collin Ryan (2 singles, RBI), Brian Morrow (2 singles, RBI), Ben Langford (2 singles), Kevin Johnston (2 singles), Jamie Danehower (double), and Brady Caslavka (walk).
In a gritty performance, starting pitcher Dan Lawler (10 K's, 4 walks, 8 hits, 5 ER, 128 pitches) went 7 innings. Will Bashaw (1 IP, 0 walks, 0 hits, 10 pitches) pitched in relief, shutting down Westfield on 3 fly balls.
Chantilly plays its final game of the regular season at Herndon on Friday at 6:30 PM.
