(Herndon, VA) – Chantilly’s varsity baseball team defeated the Herndon Hornets 7-3 Tuesday behind a 12-strikeout performance by starting pitcher Patrick Somers and an offense that generated 14 hits on the night. The victory puts the Chargers record at 5-3 on the season and 2-0 in the Concorde District.
Chantilly struck for four runs in the top of the 1st inning when center fielder Chris Gentile and catcher Keith Morrisroe led off with base hits, scoring on designated hitter Will Christopher’s RBI single and third baseman Max Langford’s fielder’s choice. Following shortstop Chris Yates’ single, first baseman Brian King and right fielder Brandon Beckner each contributed RBI base hits. The Chargers scored two more runs in the 4th inning on a Morrisroe single, an RBI double from Langford, and an RBI base hit by Yates. The final Chantilly run came in the 6th inning when right fielder Justin Carwile doubled down the right field line to score Max Langford.
The Chargers were led offensively by Keith Morrisroe, who went 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored, Pat Moore, who was 2 for 3, and Chris Yates, who went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Max Langford, Justin Carwile and Danny Phillips each doubled during the game. Other Chantilly players who contributed hits included Chris Gentile, Will Christopher, Brian King, and Brandon Beckner.
Charger pitchers struck out 16 Herndon batters on the night. Starting left-hander Pat Somers went 5 2/3 innings for the win, giving up 5 hits, 3 walks, 1 earned run, and striking out 12. Junior John Colella pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief, giving up 2 hits, 1 walk, 1 earned run and striking out 4.
The Chargers play at home against the Fairfax Rebels on Friday at 6:30 pm in another Concorde District match-up.
