Chantilly Wins 2008 Baseball Opener 11-0

(Arlington, VA) -- Chantilly’s varsity baseball team won its 2008 opener 11-0 over Yorktown Thursday night. Backed by a 13-hit attack and 1-hit shutout pitching, Chantilly jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 3rd inning behind RBI singles from third baseman Max Langford and shortstop Chris Yates, and a 2-RBI base hit from pitcher Patrick Somers. The Chargers put the game away with seven runs in the 4th inning capped by a 2-run home run from centerfielder Chris Gentile and a grand slam home run by Yates. Pat Moore and Brian King each went 2 for 3, Gentile was 2 for 2, and Yates paced the offense, going 3 for 3 with 5 RBIs. Keith Morrisroe, Will Christopher, Roger Strittmatter, and Kevin McGrath all added base hits.
Starting pitcher Pat Somers went 3 innings, yielding no hits, runs or walks, while striking out 3. Chris Yates finished in relief, going 2 innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 2.
The Chargers head to Florida on Saturday where they will compete in the Orlando National Baseball Classic March 17-21. They resume regular season play on March 27th with a 6:00 pm home game against Edison High School.
