Game Date
Apr 24, 2009
Score
CHARGERS: 9
FAIRFAX HIGH: 4

On Sponsor Appreciation Night last Friday the Varsity Chantilly Chargers defeated the Fairfax Rebels, 9-4. Starting pitcher Bill Boyle pitched the entire game. Except for the 3rd inning he did not allow a single runner past second base. Though the Chargers produced fewer hits than the Rebels, they were able to capitalize on passed balls and walks.

Chantilly got on the board in the 1st inning after a walk by Joe Danehower and a double by Danny Bates. A passed ball scored Danehower, and a ground ball by Kevin McGrath brought Bates home. The Rebels answered in the 3rd inning, producing 4 runs on 4 hits, a hit batsman, and a sac fly. In the bottom of the 3rd the Chargers took full advantage of 3 consecutive lead-off walks. All of them eventually scored, first on a double by Kevin McGrath and then a sac fly by Nick Kralles. A leadoff triple by Roger Strittmatter in the next inning allowed him to score when Wes Kerbuski doubled, the third time Wes has done so this season. Two more walks drawn by Chantilly batters in the 5th inning both scored on a single by Matt Dewitt. Chantilly's final run came in the 6th, after 2 walks and a fielding error.

Leading Chantilly's offense were Kevin McGrath (2B, BB, 3 RBI, scored), Danny Bates (2B, 2 BB,  scored 3X), Roger Strittmatter (3B, scored), and Wes Kerbuski (2B, RBI). Also contributing were Matt Dewitt (1B, 2 RBI), Brian King (2 BB, scored), Joe Danehower (3 BB, scored 2X), Nick Kralles (sac fly RBI), Tim Bollinger (BB, scored), and Jamie Danehower (SB).

The defensive play of the game goes to right fielder Tim Bollinger. With the leadoff runner on 1st in the 6th inning, Bollinger fielded a single in deep right field and threw the runner out trying to advance to 2nd. Honorable mention goes to left fielder Wes Kerbuski, who made a diving, shoestring catch.

In 7 innings Bill Boyle allowed 8 hits, 1 walk, and 4 earned runs. He struck out 3.

Chantilly plays Oakton away Monday night at 6:30 PM.
