In Thursday night's game against the Centreville Wildcats, the Varsity Chantilly Chargers made 5 fielding errors and left 9 men on base. But they still eked out a win, 3-1. Starting pitcher Jordan Johnson pitched the whole game for the win.
The Chargers scored in the 1st inning on a bases-loaded walk by catcher Matt Dewitt. The Wildcats threatened to tie in the 2nd when they got a runner to third, but a double play ended the inning. In the bottom of the 2nd Danny Bates slammed a double down the left field line, rolling all the way to the fence. Two runs scored. In the 3rd the Chargers loaded the bases with 2 outs, but were unable to score. In the 4th the Wildcats did the same. In the 5th inning Centreville first baseman JP Nicholas, starting from 2nd base, attempted to score on a single to right field. But outfielder Timmy Bollinger, in the defensive play of the game, threw a direct shot to the catcher to save the run and end the inning. In the 5th inning Kevin McGrath's 11 pitch at-bat helped to knock the Centreville starting pitcher, Connor Bach, out of the game. Centreville scored their first run in the 6th, after a double by JP Nicholas, a single by shortstop Chris Campbell, and a fielder's choice by DH Bob McMican. In the top of the 7th, with 2 outs, Centreville threatened to score again. Two Chantilly fielding errors had left runners on 2nd and 3rd base. But a fly ball to the pitcher ended the game.
Danny Bates (2B, 2 RBI), and Brian King (2 1B, BB) led the Charger offense. Also contributing were Kevin McGrath (1B, 2 BB), Matt Dewitt (1B, BB, RBI), Roger Strittmatter (BB, SB), Joe Danehower (BB), and Tim Bollinger (BB).
Starting pitcher Jordan Johnson allowed 5 hits, 1 walk, and 1 earned run. He struck out 4.
The Chargers play the Fairfax Rebels on Friday at Chantilly at 6:30 PM.
